Artist In Residence: Theater De Spiegel (2019-2020)
Bio
Theater De Spiegel is an Antwerp-based music theater company specializing in performances for very young children, particularly those aged 0 to 4 years. De Spiegel focusses on creating multisensory experiences that blend music, theater, visuals, objects, dance, and technology, aiming to stimulate curiosity and wonder in both children and adults. Since 2014, Theater De Spiegel has been based in DE Studio in Antwerp, continuing its mission to craft engaging artistic experiences for the very young.
The Residency (2019-2020): Bast
Theater De Spiegel is a music theater for the very young. In a truly original art-science collaboration, an interactive sound installation ‘BAST’ was created for babys till 14 months. The construction incorporates a wave field synthesis spatial audio installation and simulates how unborn could hear from within the mother. Theater De Spiegel is touring with the set up to kindergartens, creches and specific locations.
“BAST is a 3D sound dome. Go and lie down with your head in the middle of the dome. Where is the sound coming from? And where do you feel it in your body? BAST is an auditory rib cage in which you can feel the sound throughout your whole body. In partnership with IPEM (R&D Musicology, Ghent University).”
