Artist In Residence: Tineke De Meyer (2020)

Bio

Tineke De Meyer is a Belgian writer and creator with a Master’s degree in Literature. Her work explores the intimacy of spoken word and audio, resulting in hybrid projects that blend analog and digital elements. Her writing, characterized by associative structures, bridges poetry, memoir, and short stories, often delving into themes of perception, subjectivity, and the human experience.

One of her notable works is “Inland Island,” a performative installation and poetic audio piece that offers participants an immersive experience, blending elements of guided meditation and séance. De Meyer has collaborated with various artists and organizations, including a residency at workspacebrussels. She is based in Ghent, Belgium, and has been involved in roles such as assistant director and dramaturge at Theatercollectief SKaGeN.

The Residency (2020): Being Hungry

The work ‘Being Hungry’ is composed by Tineke De Meyer and Duncan Speakman. Being Hungry was written at the beginning of spring 2020 as some of us entered lockdown. Inspired by the book Jonathan Livingstone Seagull by Richard Bach, it imagines a small group of people that decided to devote themselves to the practice of just walking, a passion for moving around without distinctive aim.

Tineke tried to reimagine this work with IPEM by spatializing the different audio layers using trajectories designed in virtual reality. Trajectories were generated using random walk equations and enriched with gestures, hand-draw in virtual space or recorded from algorithmic swarm patterns.

The work and the final performance took place in our Art-Science-Interaction-Lab where we used Ambisonics to move sound objects from each musical layer. We present two digital copies of our lab in which we present the reimagined composition on the left and the virtual reality tool we developed on the right. Ambisonics audio is mixed-down to a binaural mix so for a natural listening experience, the listener should stand in the middle of the lab on the left, facing the video-screen.
